BARBIE COMMERCIAL REWRITE
I wrote this somewhere in the fall of 2001 or 2002 while we were driving west on SR-20 and observed a number of not-too-bright bicyclists preferring to ride as a group instead of single-file on a busy highway. We talked about that and quickly arrived at the conclusion that it was not chutzpah that was making them make traffic go around them, but sheer unthinking stupidity. Kids in the cluster, too. So, it was the work of about fifteen minutes for us to develop the following film scene...
SCENE: Steve and Cathy Cartoon are driving west on State Route 20 in the North Cascades in Washington. They are currently driving at around 45-50 MPH through Sedro-Woolley in Max, their black 1996 Pontiac Firebird. They have both noticed a rather large knot of bicyclists (some of whom are driving out in the road space). CATHY: (thumbing over her left shoulder) Man, those bicyclists on the side of the road aren't too bright, going out into the road with cement trucks coming up behind them and all. STEVE: It must be the local bicycling club or something. CATHY: Yeah, I can just picture that. (Right hand pantomimes cell phone whilst the left hand drives): "Hi, Mindy! It's a beautiful day, wanna go cycling?" (Different voice) "OK! I'll call Sue!" STEVE: (Pantomimes cell phone too) "OK, I'll call Barbie!" CUT TO: BARBIE COMMERCIAL The setting is a North Cascades photographic backdrop. Barbie and friends are happily pedaling along on Barbie-style bicycles (bluescreen stuff). SONG: "Bar-bie out on a moun-tain trail..." (Steve and Cathy drive by in Max. Steve leans out of the window with a long steel pole which he promptly sticks into the spokes of the lead bicycle, causing the whole group to crash and pile up. CUT BACK TO: Cathy and Steve in the Firebird. Cathy is laughing and shaking her head. Steve is rolling the window back up. CATHY: You are SO twisted...
